Understand
Uppland, one of the last provinces in Sweden to emerge from the depths of the Baltic Sea after the Ice Age, carries a rich historical legacy. Incredibly, around 1,500 BC, a significant portion of the land we now walk on was still underwater. Uppland proudly played host to the Suiones, besser known as the svear, who established the foundation of the Swedish nation around AD 1000. The power dynamic of the region shifted from Birka and Adels to Sigtuna, Uppsala, and ultimately Stockholm, as Lake Mlaren transformed from a brackish bay into a remarkable freshwater lake. Uppland's mastery in metallurgy during the Middle Ages earned it a distinguished reputation across Europe. However, the industrial revolution of the 19th century led to a migration of people from the countryside to the booming cities of Stockholm and Uppsala, resulting in a noticeable divide between the bustling south and the tranquil forests and coastal islands of the north. Despite this, Uppland defies a unifying provincial identity, setting it apart from other regions in Sweden.
