Travel back in time and explore the rich history of Bruneck. It is a town that has witnessed the passage of civilizations, dating back to the Stone Age. Objects from the Bronze and Iron Ages, such as the ancient stone axe in Rasen, provide a glimpse into the past and can be admired in Bruneck and its surrounding areas. Remnants of the Roman era are scattered throughout the town, like the milestone in Sonnenburg, marking the route once traversed by Roman legions from Aquileja to Aguntum. The land once inhabited by Celtic-Illyrian tribes was eventually Christianized and conquered by the Romans, until the Bavarians emerged as the region's dominant power in the sixth century. The Stift Innichen, founded by Duke Tassilo II in 769 AD, stands as a testament to this era of transition. Reflecting the influence of Bavarian settlers, the county Pustrissa became the home of Count Sunapurc, now known as the enchanting Castle Hotel Sonnenburg in Sankt Lorenzen. In 1091, Emperor Henry VI entrusted the region that would later become Bruneck to the Bishop of Brixen, Altwin. To protect his lands and assets, Bishop Bruno von Kirchberg and Bullenstein erected the magnificent Castle and town of Bruneck in 1250. Records from 1256 mention the settlement apud Bruneke, which later flourished with the establishment of weekly markets in 1370. Despite facing natural disasters and historical hardships, such as floods, the plague, and fires, Bruneck remained resilient and continued to thrive. In the fifteenth century, houses and workshops emerged, giving birth to the picturesque Stadtgasse. The years between 1814 and 1914 witnessed a period of prosperity, with an influx of visitors discovering the region's beauty, and alpinism gaining popularity. The opening of the Puster Valley Railway in 1871 further accelerated development. While the town experienced the ravages of the First and Second World Wars, it persevered, and today stands as the economic and cultural hub of the Puster Valley. The amalgamation of industry and trade has greatly benefited both residents and visitors, creating a vibrant and dynamic town that embodies the spirit of resilience.
