Understand
Hidden from maps of the Soviet Union, Zheleznogorsk, also known as Krasnoyarsk-26, was a secret city with a unique purpose: processing weapons-grade plutonium. Situated on the banks of the Yenisei River, this "closed city" was revealed after the fall of the Soviet Union. Despite the downsizing of the nuclear industry, the residents of Zheleznogorsk voted to remain a closed city, preserving its charming, village-like qualities. Set beside a picturesque artificial lake, the town resembles the beauty of St. Petersburg in Russia. With a clean environment and an efficient transportation system, Zheleznogorsk continues to captivate visitors.
