emaitija, also known as Samogitia, is a captivating western region in Lithuania. It stretches along the Nevis River, dividing the country into its western and eastern parts. This region is full of historical significance, as it was inhabited by different tribes such as the Curonians, Semigalians, and Lowlanders. Throughout history, emaitija faced constant threats from German orders, but the Samogitians remained resilient and never surrendered. In the 15th century, they finally achieved autonomy as the Duchy of Samogitia within the Grand Duchy of Lithuania. Today, emaitija is known for its strong national character, distinct from the rest of Lithuania. While it may not be a separate administrative unit, the identity of the Samogitians is fiercely defended. The capital of emaitija is Teliai, but historically, the main center has always been Varniai. Other important centers include Kraiai, Raseiniai, Tverai, Maeikiai, Plunge, Raseiniai, and Taurag.
