Zakynthos, an island with a fascinating history, has been inhabited since ancient times. Archaeological excavations have revealed evidence of Neolithic settlements on the island. According to the renowned poet Homer, Zakynthos was named after Zakynthos of Troy, the son of King Dardanos, who settled here with his men around 1500-1600 BC. Through the ages, Zakynthos faced various conquests, including by King Arkeisios of Kefalonia and the legendary Ulysses from Ithaca. However, the island later became a pioneering democracy in the Hellenic area, signing a significant treaty that lasted over 650 years. In 1953, Zakynthos endured a monumental challenge when it was struck by two devastating earthquakes. These natural disasters caused widespread destruction, wiping out the island's infrastructure and most of its historical records. Despite the devastation, the resilient islanders rebuilt with an unwavering commitment to seismic safety. The remarkable St. Dionysios Cathedral, the National Bank building, and the church of St. Nicholas "tou Molou" were the only structures left standing in Zakynthos Town. Since then, Zakynthos has endured subsequent earthquakes with minimal damage, thanks to its rigid anti-seismic code. While mining was once a common activity on the island, today tourism reigns supreme as the primary source of income. Zakynthos has become one of Greece's most sought-after tourist destinations, enchanting visitors with its stunning landscapes and rich history.
