The Yakama people were the original inhabitants of the Yakima Valley. They lived off the land, which was rich in wildlife and fertile soil. But their peaceful existence was disrupted when settlers arrived in the 1800s. This led to the Yakima War, in which the U.S. Army established Fort Simcoe as a response to the uprising. Ultimately, the Yakamas were defeated and forced to relocate to the Yakama Indian Reservation. Yakima County was established in 1865. In the late 1800s, when the Northern Pacific Railroad bypassed the area, the city of North Yakima was born. Over 100 buildings were transported to the new site, showcasing the resilience and resourcefulness of the early settlers. The city was officially incorporated and named the county seat in 1886, and its name was later changed to Yakima in 1918. Meanwhile, the original site became Union Gap.
