Understand
Wiseman, a mining community, was founded by those who had left the town of Coldfoot in the 1910s. Its rich history is captured in the classic Alaskan novel Arctic Village by wilderness activist and novelist Robert Marshall. The town has been described as "the happiest civilization" by Marshall himself. In the early 1990s, a bridge was finally constructed, connecting Wiseman with the Dalton Highway and bringing new opportunities for exploration.
Keep in mind that Wiseman is a place of private property. It is important to stay on designated trails and respect the privacy of the residents.
Get in
Wiseman, a remote and alluring destination, can only be accessed through the adventurous Dalton Highway. To reach Wiseman, follow the highway until Mile 188 and then take a road westward over the Koyukuk River. While Wiseman has a small, unmaintained airstrip, the nearest well-maintained airstrip is in Coldfoot, located 13 miles to the south. However, reaching Wiseman from Coldfoot or any other town along the Dalton Highway requires hitchhiking with passing vehicles, as there are no car rentals or regular transportation services available. For the truly daring, an alternative and exhilarating option is to enter Wiseman via dog sled, although such services are not available between towns in the region.
