Understand
Winton, a town rich in history, was originally known as Pelican Waterhole and has been inhabited since 1875. This is the very place where AB (Banjo) Paterson penned his famous ballad, Waltzing Matilda, in 1895, while staying at Dagworth Station just outside Winton. The first performance of this iconic piece of Australian bush poetry was held at Winton's North Gregory Hotel on April 6 of that same year. Winton also holds the distinction of being the 'home' of Australian bush poetry, hosting the annual Bronze Swagman Award, one of the country's most prestigious literary prizes. Additionally, it was in Winton that the Queensland and Northern Territory Aerial Service (Qantas), Australia's national airline, was established in November 1920. The inaugural board meeting took place at the Winton Club on February 21, 1921. But there's more to Winton than just its historical significance. The town is famous for its unique water supply that gushes from three artesian bores, each around 1,200 meters deep and emerging at a scorching 83 degrees Celsius. This water is sourced from the Great Artesian Basin, which provides water to vast areas of Australia's Outback. Located in the heart of Matilda Country, Winton offers breathtaking views of Mitchell Grass plains dotted with spectacularly colored gorges, ridges, and jump-ups. The sheer vastness of the plains and undulating landscapes will leave visitors in awe. The area is teeming with diverse wildlife, best observed during the magical hours of dusk and dawn along the lesser-traveled roads and tracks. For those looking to explore further afield, day trips from Winton will take you to Opalton, one of the oldest opal fields in Queensland, Combo Waterhole where the legendary swagman of 'Waltzing Matilda' fame supposedly met his fate, the historic sandstone homestead of Old Cork Station, and Lark Quarry, where fossils from a dinosaur stampede over 93 million years ago have been preserved.
