Before becoming a mecca for skiers and snowboarders, Whistler had a humble beginning as a logging town known as Alta Lake. Back then, the snow-capped peaks already attracted attention. Inspired by the 1960 Winter Olympics held in Squaw Valley, a group of visionary Canadian investors set their sights on building a ski resort in the Alta Lake area, hoping to attract the 1968 Winter Olympics. However, the name "London Mountain" didn't quite capture the essence of this soon-to-be skiing paradise. A more fitting name came from the high-pitched whistles and chirps of the hoary marmots that called the area home. Thus, London Mountain became Whistler Mountain. In 1966, the dream started to take shape with the opening of the first ski resort in what is now the Creekside area. The excitement continued to grow as Intrawest Corporation unveiled another resort on Blackcomb Mountain in December 1980. And finally, the meticulously planned Whistler Village opened, becoming the heart of the community. 1997 marked a turning point as Intrawest Corporation merged with the Whistler Mountain Ski Corporation, uniting both resorts into the incredible Whistler Blackcomb that we know today. The ultimate dream of hosting the Winter Olympics came true in 2010, as Whistler proudly welcomed the world to witness thrilling sliding events and remarkable ski competitions. Even during the challenging times of the Great Recession, Whistler Blackcomb persevered. Intrawest Corporation spun off the resort as a separate public corporation in 2010 and subsequently sold off its remaining shares in 2012. Whistler Blackcomb has stood as a symbol of resilience and passion, inviting adventurers from around the globe to experience the magic of the mountains.
