Understand
The High Tatras, part of the Carpathian mountain range and located in the northern part of Slovakia, near the Polish border, offer an awe-inspiring natural landscape. Divided into Western, High, and Belianske Tatras, this region has earned its place as a national park (TANAP) and UNESCO preservation site. The High Tatras boast majestic peaks, picturesque mountain lakes, and captivating basins. Among its notable peaks are Gerlachovský štít (2,655 m), Lomnický štít (2,633 m), Rysy (2,503 m), and Kriváň (2,494 m). While Gerlachovský štít, Slovakia's highest peak, may be challenging to reach, the Lomnický štít can be accessed by a convenient cable car ride. In November 2004, a severe storm caused significant damage to parts of the forest, disrupting its flora and fauna. Although the aftermath of the storm resulted in soil erosion due to the loss of protective trees, the landscape has been largely restored. This natural disaster did not deter the thriving tourism industry in the High Tatras. Ski centers, hotels, and charming cottages continue to welcome visitors, ready to provide an unforgettable experience amidst the stunning mountain scenery.
