Welcome to Vieng Xai, a remarkable district and town situated in Hua Phan Province. Located on Route 6, just 30 kilometers away from the provincial capital of Sam Neua and 55 kilometers from the Vietnam/Laos border in Na Meo, Vieng Xai offers an unforgettable adventure. What makes Vieng Xai truly extraordinary are its caves. These caves served as the former headquarters of the Pathet Lao, nestled within a striking valley adorned with fertile hills and limestone cliffs. During the turbulent era of the second Indochina War, these caves provided refuge for Pathet Lao officers, shielding them from the conflict. The intricate cave networks within the limestone karst formations became the hidden sanctuary of the Pathet Lao's struggle against the American-backed Royal Lao Government. In these vast cave systems, the Pathet Lao established a Hidden City accommodating around 20,000 people. Despite facing nearly a decade of relentless bombing, they persevered and built a thriving community underground. Schools, hospitals, markets, government ministries, a radio station, a theater, and military barracks all found their place within these extraordinary caves. In 1973, a ceasefire marked the end of the bombings, leading to the establishment of the new town of Vieng Xay as the capital of the liberated zone. Eventually, on December 2, 1975, the Lao People's Democratic Republic was established, and the capital city was transferred to Vientiane. Join us as we explore the resilience and history of Vieng Xai, a testament to the indomitable spirit of its people.
