Welcome to Vandalia, the historic hometown of Abraham Lincoln! Just two years after Illinois became a state, the state capital made its way to Vandalia. Over the years, three different buildings served as the Capitol, each with its own story. The first one unfortunately burned down, the second was eventually torn down, but the third still stands proudly as a historic site. This site holds not only a significant place in Illinois history but also in the life of our beloved Lincoln. In 1839, however, the legislature made a bold move, relocating to Springfield, leaving the once quiet town of Vandalia behind. Before the era of modern highways, the United States government took on the impressive task of building the National Road in 1811. This road was designed to connect Maryland with Missouri, becoming the first federally-funded road in the country. Although it was halted in Vandalia in 1839 due to funding challenges, the National Road played a crucial role in opening up the western frontier for thousands of settlers. It paved the way for their journey, bringing them as far as central Illinois. When the modern US highway system was established in 1925, the National Road became an integral part of US 40. You have the incredible opportunity to explore the last standing Vandalia State Capitol, stepping into the very chamber where Lincoln once sat. Immerse yourself in the rich history of this place. Don't forget to visit the National Road Interpretive Center and the county museum, where you can marvel at authentic artifacts and fascinating antiques from Lincoln's era. Come and experience the past come alive!
