Understand
The Valencian Community, located in the historical Kingdom of Valencia, has a rich history rooted in the Reconquista. The region was reclaimed from the Muslims by the Christians between 1232 and 1245. It was an integral part of the Crown of Aragon, which eventually became part of the Kingdom of Spain.
In the 18th century, the War of the Spanish Succession shook the Kingdom of Valencia. It supported the Austrian Archduke Charles but was defeated by the French supporters of Philip V. As a result, Philip V abolished the privileges and institutions of the rebellious regions.
In 1833, the Kingdom of Valencia was divided into the provinces of Alicante, Valencia, and Castellon. After further territorial and governmental reorganizations, the Valencian Community gained its current status as an autonomous community of Spain in 1982.
