Imagine living on an island made entirely of rushes. That's exactly what the people of the Uros Islands do! These unique islands, which predate the Incas, are made from tortora rushes, which are also used to build their houses and boats. Interestingly, the residents can even eat parts of the tortora!
Legend has it that the people of the Uros Islands sought refuge on these floating paradises to escape from hostile tribes, including the powerful Incas. In fact, the islands can be moved, and they have been in recent years due to the Shining Path revolutionary movement. They were relocated to be closer to the mainland for safety reasons.
Nowadays, tourism plays a vital role in the islands' economy. Until recently, the only way to visit the islands was through daytime tours. However, a new option for accommodation has opened up, offering a chance to live the island life and connect with the locals on a deeper level.
Keep in mind that some tours can be a bit tacky, with sales pitches for handicrafts, food, drinks, and additional boat rides. If you prefer a more authentic experience, you might want to explore other islands where the tourist impact is less evident.
