Visiting this site may not be an easy task, but now there is a fully sealed road leading all the way. The journey takes approximately 7.5 hours or 510 kilometers if you are driving from Townsville, with parts of the route consisting of rough outback roads. From Cairns, the drive takes around 4 hours or 275 kilometers. To reach the site from Cairns, head north on National Route 1 until you reach Smithfield. From there, turn west onto the scenic Kennedy Highway, passing through Kuranda, Mareeba, Atherton, Herbert, Ravenshoe, Innot Hot Springs, and Mt Garnet. Continue heading west towards Mt Surprise; the turn off to Undara is located 18 kilometers along this road, followed by another 14 kilometers to Undara Lava Lodge. The road trip offers beautiful landscapes and adventure, making it an exciting journey to Undara.
