Understand
Welcome to Tulum, a Mayan ruin site that was once a bustling port supported by up to 1000 residents. Today, its main attraction is the stunning tropical beach backdrop, making it a must-visit destination on the shores of the Caribbean Sea. But be prepared for a popular spot! This archaeological site tends to get crowded with lots of people and tour groups. To avoid the crowds, it's best to stay overnight and visit the ruins early in the morning before the buses arrive or later in the afternoon. I recommend the morning, as you'll be able to catch spectacular views of the sun rising over the Caribbean. Tulum has three distinct areas: Downtown, Ruins, and the Hotel Zone. The hotel zone is a few miles ahead of the ruins, offering eco cabanas, restaurants, spas, and more. Downtown, on the other hand, is where you'll find local establishments and a less touristy vibe. For more detailed information, check out our guide to Three Tulums Area. Keep in mind that many establishments here don't accept credit cards, and there aren't many ATMs within walking distance of the cabanas. So make sure to have enough cash on hand. Additionally, access to wifi and telephone signal is limited. So get ready for a tech-free adventure!
