Understand
Tula, a city older than Moscow, has a rich history. It was initially a major outpost for nomads until it became a part of the Dutchy of Muscovy and its southern fort in 1503. In 1552, Tula bravely withstood a siege by Khan Devlet Geray, despite being a city of only 30,000 people. During the Dark Times of the 16th century, Tula became an epicenter, and later, it flourished as a renowned producer of iron guns, a reputation it still holds today. The city is also famous for its high-quality samovars and recognizable pryaniki (cookies).
