Towada-Hachimantai National Park is an expansive park that offers various routes for exploration. Whether you want to visit the captivating Lake Towada, the breathtaking Oirase Valley, the majestic Hakkoda Mountains, or the relaxing Sukayu Onsen, there are multiple access options for you to choose from. To reach the northern side of the park, where attractions such as Lake Towada, the Oirase Valley, Hakkoda Mountains, and Sukayu Onsen are located, the nearest major city is Aomori. From Aomori, you can conveniently take buses that will get you to your desired destination in 1-2 hours. Alternatively, direct buses are available from Hachinohe and Morioka, both taking around 2.5 hours. If you wish to explore the central areas of the park, you can take the JR Hanawa Line. This train line crosses the northern side of the Hachimantai Plateau, starting from Odate in the west and reaching Koma in the east. It also offers through services on the private Iwate Ginga Railway (IGR) to Morioka. Do note that the IGR is not covered by the Japan Rail Pass. For those planning to visit the southernmost parts of the park, the JR Tazawako Line is the way to go. This train line runs along the south edge of the Hachimantai Plateau, connecting Morioka and Daisen.
