Welcome to the vibrant city of Toronto! In 1998, the current City of Toronto was formed through the amalgamation of several cities and boroughs, including Toronto, Scarborough, North York, Etobicoke, and York. Known as Metropolitan Toronto or "the 416," after its area code, this bustling city has a population of over 2.6 million people. More than half of its residents were born outside of Canada, creating a multicultural paradise with street signs in various languages. Toronto and its surrounding suburbs make up the Greater Toronto Area (GTA). The GTA includes outlying suburbs, also known as "the 905" after their area code, extending to Hamilton and Niagara Falls. This entire area, famously known as the "Golden Horseshoe," is home to over 8 million people. With its vast expanse, distances between cities can be significant, and many suburban residents rely on motor vehicles for transportation. Toronto proudly embraces its multiculturalism and is home to many ethnic festivals throughout the year. The city offers a diverse range of experiences, with radio stations and television channels broadcasting in various languages. The City of Toronto officially deals in 16 different languages, and even large department stores like The Bay in downtown Toronto provide service in nine languages. Although English remains the lingua franca of the city, the cultural mosaic of Toronto is truly a sight to behold.
