Tornio, the oldest city in Lapland, has a rich history dating back to 1621. With a population of approximately 22,000, it is a vibrant city. Tornio is uniquely connected to the Swedish town of Haparanda, forming an economic zone together. The city boasts a prominent steel factory and was once home to the famous Lapin Kulta brewery. Although the brewery closed in 2010, the industrial sector, particularly the Outokumpu steel company, remains a major source of employment in the Tornio area. During the winter, Tornio offers the opportunity to witness the awe-inspiring Northern Lights.
