Understand
Tornadoes, spinning columns of low-pressure air, generate high winds and can lift heavy objects as they move. Unlike hurricanes, tornadoes develop rapidly and give minimal warning. They occur most frequently in the spring and early summer, but can happen any time of the year. While the highest frequency of tornadoes is observed in "Tornado Alley" in the Great Plains region of the United States, tornadoes can develop wherever warm, moist air mixes with cool, dry air. The Midwest, the South, and the Mid-Atlantic also experience powerful tornadoes. Even Canada and the Netherlands have their fair share of tornadoes. As a short-term visitor, the chances of encountering a tornado are quite small, so no need to worry! Just be prepared and stay safe in case of unexpected weather.
Get in!
In tornado-prone areas, having a storm shelter or safe room specifically designed for tornado safety is the best place to seek refuge. These can often be found in rural homes and mobile home parks. Remember, the key is to stay calm and not panic. Quickly find the safest area you can to protect yourself.
