The Department of Conservation (DOC) no longer permits visitors to park their cars at the Mangatepopo end of the track due to frequent incidents of theft. As a result, shuttle services from Ketatahi no longer drop people off at the Mangatepopo carpark. Instead, they will only drop off passengers on the main road, which is approximately 7 kilometers away from the carpark. To address this issue, DOC is actively encouraging visitors to leave their cars at Whakapapa Village. From there, you can conveniently take a shuttle to the starting point of the track. At the end of your journey, the shuttle will bring you back to Whakapapa Village for a fee of $15. This approach helps ensure the safety of your vehicle while still allowing you to enjoy the Tongariro Alpine Crossing.
