The Castle/Convent of Christ in Tomar has a rich history dating back to the time of the Templar Knights. Originally serving as the headquarters of the Order of the Temple until 1314, it later became the residence of the Order of Christ from 1357. The castle features the impressive Charola, a Romanesque sanctuary built in the late 12th century with influences from the East. Recognizing its cultural significance, UNESCO designated this site as a World Heritage Monument in 1983. Founded by Gualdim Pais, the grand master of the Templars, Tomar played a central role in Portugal's overseas expansion, making it a city of great importance. Its old town, adorned with churches, chapels, palaces, and vibrant festivals, serves as a testament to its historical and cultural significance.
