From the elusive little spotted kiwi to the resplendent takahe, every winged creature here is a testament to the island's commitment to preservation. Spanning across 220 hectares, Tiritiri Matangi has undergone a remarkable transformation. Once ravaged by farming, it has now been revitalized through the dedicated efforts of the Department of Conservation and numerous volunteers. Over a quarter of a million trees have been planted, enveloping 60% of the island in lush forest. The remaining 40% is a grassland haven for the magnificent Takahe, a species that was once thought to be extinct. To maintain the pristine beauty of the island, there are no dustbins. Remember to carry out what you bring in, ensuring the island remains rubbish-free. Take the time to savor the natural ambience, appreciating the delicate balance of its ecosystem. Please respect the sanctuary by refraining from smoking, except in designated areas such as the wharf and lighthouse. With a daily limit of 150 visitors, Tiritiri Matangi provides an intimate and exclusive experience. Prepare yourself for exploration, from donning a wide-brimmed hat and applying sunblock to bringing along a rain jacket and warm clothing. Binoculars will enhance your birdwatching adventures, enabling you to observe these magnificent creatures up close.
