Understand
Tioman Island, situated in Pahang on the East Coast of Malaysia, is a tropical paradise within the Mersing Marine Park. This idyllic island stands out from other commercial islands such as Sibu Island due to its pristine beauty and untouched landscapes. The movie industry has recognized the allure of Tioman's beaches, with the island being featured as "Bali Hai" in the 1958 movie "South Pacific". Time magazine has also bestowed honors on Tioman, naming it one of the world's most beautiful islands in the 1970s. Surrounded by stunning white coral reefs, this densely forested island has become a sought-after destination for scuba divers from all over the region. While Tioman has seen some development over the years, it still retains its peaceful charm. However, a controversial marina project in Kampung Tekek threatens to accelerate development on the island. Visitors who prefer a more untouched experience can choose to explore other parts of the island where the impact of development is minimal. As you wander around Tioman, you may encounter enormous monitor lizards sunning themselves in the tropical heat. In the kampongs, you might even spot these reptiles searching for food among the rubbish piles. Domestic cats also roam freely on the island, adding to its unique charm. It's important to note that rubbish control on the island is a work in progress, although some resorts have made efforts to maintain cleanliness. However, don't let this deter you from visiting Tioman, as progress is being made in areas like Air Batong. With a little encouragement, the island has the potential to become an even more enchanting destination.
