Understand
Revolucion, the bustling street in downtown Tijuana, is a vibrant hub filled with shops, bars, and restaurants, catering to tourists from all over. But don't be mistaken, this is just a small slice of what Tijuana has to offer. Tijuana is a highly suburbanized city, far different from the rest of Mexico. While downtown is the heart of Tijuana, it is not a true representation of the country. As you walk along Revolucion, you'll come across an array of stores. From baggage, trinkets, and jewelry shops to dental clinics, optical stores, and stylish boutiques, there is something for everyone's taste. If you venture inside the charming plazas, you'll discover the hidden gems of downtown Tijuana. Art galleries, wine tasting experiences, and group dancing are just a few of the cultural delights waiting to be explored. For those seeking family-friendly activities, occasional events like classic car shows and children's entertainment can be found. However, it's important to note that these festivities are not available late at night. One block west of Revolucion, Constitucion Avenue offers a different atmosphere. It is a busy street without the bustling nightclubs and pushy shop owners. However, it must be emphasized that this area is not an authentic representation of Tijuana or Mexico as a whole. It consists mostly of practical small businesses that serve the urban community. It is advisable to avoid walking too far north on this street or onto Revolucion, especially below Juarez (Segunda), as it leads you straight into the red light district. Although downtown may have its fair share of grittiness, it remains a convenient location. Apart from the affordable lodging options, you'll also find numerous 24-hour convenience stores like Oxxo, Extra, and 7-11. There are supermarkets for all your shopping needs, and public transportation is available 24/7 to take you to any part of the city, even Rosarito. Additionally, downtown is conveniently situated near the more upscale and pleasant neighborhoods. So, while parts of downtown Tijuana may not be the most glamorous, it serves as a central hub with its own unique charm. From its lively atmosphere to its proximity to essential amenities, there is always something to discover in this bustling district.
Get in
To get to Avenida Revolucin in Tijuana from San Diego, cross the San Ysidro border and follow the signs. You'll see a beautiful arch at the intersection of Avenida Revolucin and Primer Callejn Z. It's a short 15-minute walk from the border. Once you reach the arch, turn left and walk southbound along the Avenue. If you prefer a quicker option, you can also take a taxi. There are two types of taxis available: the traditional Yellow Cabs and the Street Cabs. Yellow Cabs are easy to find, just look for cab drivers wearing a yellow and black uniform. Most of them speak English and accept US dollars. Before starting the ride, negotiate the fare which should be around $3 US to Avenida Revolucin, Zona Centro. You can even arrange for the same cab to pick you up later without any additional charges. On the other hand, Street Cabs are white cars with a red stripe and labeled as "Libre" (free). They usually line up along the street and some have dispatchers with written rates. Street Cabs are usually cheaper than Yellow Cabs, with fares almost half the price. Like Yellow Cabs, they also accept US dollars, but make sure to confirm the fare before starting the ride and have the exact amount as they don't carry change. For those coming from San Ysidro, you can catch the Mexicoach to the bus station in Zona Centro, located in the middle of Avenida Revolucin, the heart of the Zona Centro District. The Mexicoach is a convenient option to reach the bustling bus station.
