Thrissur, one of the oldest cities in Kerala, has a rich history that dates back to ancient times. Legend has it that Lord Parasurama, the sixth incarnation of Lord Vishnu, created the city soon after the formation of Kerala by establishing a magnificent Shiva temple. This temple, known as Vadakumnathan Temple, is the heart of Thrissur and is surrounded by a sprawling 64-acre mega roundabout called Swaraj Round. The giant square in front of the temple, known as Thekkinkad Maidan, serves as a focal point connecting all the roads of Thrissur. When you think of Thrissur, the first thing that comes to mind is the famous Thrissur Pooram festival. This colorful and spectacular temple festival is not only the largest in Kerala but also the largest in all of India! Held at the Vadakkumnathan temple grounds, the festival takes place in April or May. Thrissur is equally renowned for its grand celebrations of the Onam festival, the national festival of Kerala. During the Onam celebrations in August or September, the city hosts the famous Pulikali, a vibrant performance featuring people painted as tigers. Apart from its festivals and cultural heritage, Thrissur is also famous for its excellent shopping centers, especially for silk fabrics and gold ornaments. The city is often referred to as the "Entrepreneurial City" due to the large number of thriving entrepreneurs engaged in various trades. Thrissur truly offers a unique blend of history, culture, and shopping experiences!
