Visiting Thekkady is an enchanting experience. As you wind through tranquil countryside, rich plantations, and thick jungles, you'll find yourself captivated by its beauty. The sanctuary is located 60 km from Idukki, 190 km from Cochin, and 114 km from Kottayam and remains open throughout the year. However, the best season to visit is from September to March. The sanctuary is centered around a large (24 sq km) artificial lake created by a dam across the Periyar River. It is considered one of the top holiday destinations in India.
If you want to stay close to Thekkady, Kumily is an ideal option. Located just 4 km away, Kumily offers excellent hotels, a bustling shopping market, and various restaurants. If you're traveling from Madurai, it is approximately 120 km away (around 4 hours by state transport bus) and can be easily reached.
