Understand
Thanlyin and Kyauktan, once thriving cities on the Irrawaddy Delta, now stand as forgotten suburbs of Yangon. Centuries ago, these cities were bustling ports and centers of trade. However, King Alaungpaya's destruction left them in ruins. Among the notable figures associated with Thanlyin and Kyauktan is the adventurous Portuguese mercenary, Philip de Brito. He even declared himself as the king of Syriam, the former name of these cities. However, his short-lived reign came to an end in 1613 when he was defeated by the Bamar and subjected to a gruesome fate. Today, these once prominent cities have faded into obscurity, overshadowed by the vibrant metropolis of Yangon.
