Over the past 25 years, the once lush jungle covering the majority of the Riau province has suffered devastating losses. Approximately two-thirds of this precious ecosystem has been mercilessly destroyed due to rampant logging and subsequent conversion into tree farms or oil palm plantations. To combat this ecological crisis, a remarkable park was established in 2004. But that's not all – in 2007, the park's size increased twofold, demonstrating a fierce determination to preserve this invaluable natural haven. Sadly, the park continues to face ongoing threats, including illegal logging, illicit land conversion into oil palm plantations, and the heart-wrenching killing of wild elephants by villagers residing on the park's boundaries. We must unite in safeguarding this sanctuary and protecting its remarkable biodiversity.

Get in

If you are planning to visit the Kerinci Seblat National Park in Sumatra, there are several ways to get there. By plane: If you are coming from outside of Sumatra, you can fly into Pekanbaru. From there, you can go to the WWF headquarters where they can arrange passage for you to the park. By bus: There is no regular bus service to the park or the nearby cities and villages. However, there are other transportation options available. By motorbike: If you prefer a more adventurous journey, you can rent a motorbike and travel to the park. The park headquarters is in Kerinci Pelalawan in Riau, about 5 hours by motorbike from Pekanbaru. To get to the park from the headquarters, you will need to travel down a dirt logging road. Along the way, you will pass through oil palm plantations, tree farms, and cleared jungle awaiting conversion. The journey takes about 2 1/2 to 3 hours.
