Calling all cat lovers! Welcome to Tashirojima, a paradise for feline enthusiasts and a highlight of any visit to Japan. Nicknamed "Cat Island," Tashirojima is the most popular and well-known among Japan's many "Cat Islands." Inhabited by a small population of older individuals and a thriving colony of stray cats, this island offers a truly unique experience. In the past, the residents of Tashirojima were primarily silkworm farmers who relied on cats to keep the mouse population under control, protecting their precious farms. The island's fishermen also developed a fondness for their feline companions and would generously feed them the scraps from their daily catches. As time passes, Tashirojima faces a gradual depopulation, with most of its residents being elderly. Meanwhile, the number of cats continues to grow, resulting in an incredible ratio of approximately four cats for every human resident. Visit Tashirojima and immerse yourself in the captivating world of cats, where these furry friends have left an indelible mark on the island's history and culture.
