Understand
The Tanami Road is an adventurous route that connects Aboriginal communities and gold mines. Starting from Alice Springs, the road becomes sealed until just past Tilmouth Well Roadhouse in the Northern Territory. From there, the road transitions into a mix of sealed and gravel sections, providing a thrilling ride through the rugged Australian Outback. The gravel sections, consisting of rocky and rough stretches, add an element of excitement to the journey. However, the true test lies in the sandy section that spans approximately 25km. This sandy oasis takes travelers past the Yuelamu (Mt Alan) turnoff, offering an opportunity to explore the striking landscape halfway through the route. Beyond Yuendumu, the road sheds its seal and becomes an unsealed track, stretching all the way to the Great Northern Highway in Western Australia. It's a wild ride for those seeking an adrenaline rush and a chance to immerse themselves in the beauty of the remote desert. Fuel can be acquired at the Tilmouth Well Roadhouse and in Yuendumu at Big Shop and Mining Shop. It's important to note that there are no fuel stops until reaching Halls Creek in Western Australia or taking a detour to Balgo in Western Australia. Unfortunately, the Rabbit Flat Roadhouse, once a pitstop along the Tanami Road, is no longer in operation. So buckle up, fill your tank, and embark on an unforgettable journey through the heart of the Australian Outback!
