Taketomi Island, although small in size (only 5.4 km), stands out among the Yaeyaman islands due to its unique characteristics. Its convenient location near Ishigaki and its well-preserved Ryky village make it a popular destination for visitors. The village is adorned with charming red clay roofs topped with guardian shisa lions, surrounded by volcanic stone walls and vibrant flower beds (particularly enchanting in spring). The village streets, mostly unpaved lanes of white sand, are filled with the delightful sight of water buffalo leisurely pulling carts packed with tourists. It's important to note that Taketomi Town, which covers not only Taketomi Island but also the neighboring and much larger Iriomote Island, as well as the rest of the Yaeyama islands except Ishigaki and Yonaguni. So, if an address includes "Taketomi," it may be located elsewhere in this captivating archipelago!
