Tachileik, located just across the river from Mae Sai, the northernmost town in Thailand, offers a completely different experience. Step into a world where the vibrant and welcoming atmosphere of 'the land of smiles' fades away, replaced by a slightly tense ambiance. While the Burmese people are friendly and love engaging with tourists, there is an undeniable sense of being watched by government officials. But fear not, as long as you respect local customs and avoid drawing unnecessary attention, Tachileik and the border area of Myanmar will offer you an incredible adventure. Tachileik embodies the essence of a typical border trading town but with its own unique twist. The majority of people crossing over into Myanmar are Thai shoppers hunting for bootlegged Chinese goods in the bustling market. Imagine the surreal sight of groups of people carrying golf clubs while crossing the border, eager to enjoy a round at the region's only golf course. For those feeling lucky, there's even a small casino catering to all, including those with modest budgets. Picture yourself at a 10 baht roulette table, taking a gamble in this fascinating town. If your goal is to witness the authentic Myanmar, Tachileik might not be the ideal destination. However, if you're collecting passport stamps, seeking a more raw experience than what Thailand offers (think men donning traditional longyis), or finding yourself with a free day in Chiang Rai, then Tachileik is the perfect place to visit. The best part? The border area is easily accessible, granting you another stamp in your passport and a taste of life in Myanmar. During the wet season, Tachileik experiences periodic flooding, usually occurring 2 or 3 times. The Ruak River rises rapidly but recedes just as quickly. While it's not uncommon for the town center to be temporarily flooded, the border crossing itself remains unaffected. However, on September 5th, 2014, an intense overnight storm caused a significant increase in river flow, resulting in an exceptional flood where the river even overflowed onto the border bridge.
