Understand
Sulina, a small fisherman city and summer resort, brims with a vibrant history. Positioned as the Gateway to the Black Sea, Sulina port held great importance as one of the key ports on the Danube. It was the birthplace of the European Danube Commission and even boasted being the first duty-free zone in 19th century Europe. As British explorers set out to map the Delta, they embarked on their journey from Sulina, leaving behind remnants of that illustrious era. Although not all remains in pristine condition, these remnants still offer a glimpse into the city's glorious past.
Get in
Approaching Sulina is an extraordinary experience as there are no roads leading to this captivating destination. The sole way to reach mainland Romania is by water. If arriving by car, it is advisable to park in a secure parking lot in Tulcea harbor, which costs around 10 lei per day. Keeping in mind that there is no use for cars within Sulina itself, it is impractical and expensive to transport your car there. From Tulcea, two boat options await: a leisurely ferry operated by the state company NAVROM or high-speed boats provided by numerous companies. The NAVROM ferry journey takes approximately 4 hours and can be purchased either at the Tulcea port or online by clicking [HERE](https://www.navromdelta.ro/en/buy-tickets/). Ticket options include one-way or return, and it is unnecessary to purchase tickets well in advance as each ferry can accommodate around 200 passengers. Departures from Tulcea occur once daily at 13:30, and from Sulina at 07:00. The price for a one-way ticket is approximately 45 lei. Alternatively, several speed boat companies offer transportation between Tulcea and Sulina. These smaller boats can carry up to 20 passengers, and it is highly recommended to make a reservation at least one day in advance. The journey on these boats takes around 90 minutes, with prices at 60 lei for foreigners and 50 lei for locals. The earliest departure is at 8 a.m., and the last one is at 4 p.m. (during summer, the last departure is at 6:30 p.m.). To embark on your journey to Tulcea, convenient train and bus options are available from Bucharest or Constanta. Check [HERE](https://www.cfrcalatori.ro/en/cum-cumpar-online/) for train timetables and prices and [HERE](https://www.autogari.ro/) for bus schedules and fares. Obtaining train tickets online grants you a 5% discount. Get ready to immerse yourself in the natural beauty of Sulina, an enchanting destination accessible only through aquatic pathways.
