Interestingly, Stanley has been known by different names throughout history. Some mistakenly believe that the name "Port Stanley" was used to rename the ancient settlement of Puerto Soledad, but that settlement still exists as Port Louis. Stanley, however, emerged independently from previous settlements in 1843. It's worth noting that Argentina's claim to the islands has led to the invention of alternative names like Puerto Rivero and Puerto Argentino, but these names are only recognized by Argentinians and hold no significance to the locals of Stanley or the Falkland Islanders.

Stanley also has a smaller airport just outside of town, primarily used for domestic flights. However, it is possible to land on an international flight at Mount Pleasant airport and then take a domestic flight to Stanley.
