Understand
Sitting proudly atop a steep hill, the St. Hilarion Castle offers breathtaking views of Kyrenia and the coast. This fairytale castle, rumored to have inspired Disneyland's castle, is the best preserved of North Cyprus' three castles. Although most of the castle is in ruins, its historical significance cannot be underestimated.
The castle takes its name not from the founder of monasticism, but from a mysterious saint who sought refuge in Cyprus when the Arabs invaded the Holy Land. His hermitage on this hilltop eventually became a monastery, later housing his relics. It is said that pilgrims would come to pay homage to the saint's tomb. The castle itself dates back to 1191, when it was successfully besieged by Richard the Lionheart after the conquest of Kyrenia.
Get in
Prepare yourself for an awe-inspiring visit to St. Hilarion. Located just off the main highway connecting Kyrenia and Nicosia, this historical site is not to be missed. With its well-placed signs, St. Hilarion is easy to find. However, there is no public transport available, so we recommend renting a car or chartering a taxi/dolmus for an unforgettable adventure. Keep in mind that the road to the castle crosses military terrain, adding an element of excitement to your journey. Walking is prohibited, but for the daring and adventurous souls, an alternative route from Kyrenia is possible. This route is tricky, steep, and requires some rock scrambling, but the breathtaking views make it all worthwhile. Follow the double green striped markers from Zeytinlik village, located southwest of the center of Kyrenia, and prepare to have your senses heightened as you embark on this unforgettable expedition. Make sure to stay on the path, as venturing off is forbidden and part of the military area. Get ready for a thrilling exploration!
