Get in
Sullurpeta, located about 20 km away from Sriharikota, is the nearest town to the famous space station. If you're coming from Chennai, which is approximately 80 km from Sullurpeta, you can easily reach the town by taking a bus from the Chennai Mofussil Bus Terminus (CMBT) at Koyambedu. Look for buses heading to Nellore, Tada, and other destinations, which will most likely pass through Sullurpeta. These buses can usually be found at Platform 3, specifically Bus Bay No. 18 or 19. The journey from CMBT to Sullurpeta takes about 2 hours, and you'll be traveling along NH 5, a four-lane road known for its scenic beauty. Once you reach the Sullurpeta bus stand, you need to make your way to the 'SHAR' (Sriharikota Range) bus stand, which is around a kilometer or two away. You can hire an auto-rickshaw or share-auto to reach there. From the 'SHAR' bus stand, you have the option of taking a bus to the space station. However, it's more exciting to hop into a jeep or share-auto to get there. Be prepared for a fun ride, as you might need to stand on the footboard at the rear end of the jeep or even sit in the driver's seat without driving the vehicle! The cost for a jeep drive is Rs.10 per person, and the share-auto fare is even lower. During the drive, you'll be treated to breathtaking views of the Pulicat lake on both sides of the road. If you're lucky, you might even catch a glimpse of some majestic pelicans at the Pulicat Bird Sanctuary along the way! If you prefer a more comfortable journey, you can consider taking an electric train from Chennai Central to Sullurpeta. This option is not only cheaper than the bus but also offers a higher level of comfort. The travel time by train is approximately 2 to 2.5 hours.
