Sri Kalahasti, a temple town located about 38 km from Tirupati, is a place of great religious significance. The ancient temple is dedicated to Lord Shiva, known as Sri Kalahastheeswara, and his consort Parvathi, represented as Gnanaprasunambika. This temple is one of the Panchabootha Sthalams, where Lord Shiva is revered as the embodiment of the primary elements - Fire, Space, Water, Earth, and Air. Air is the element celebrated in this temple. Sri Kalahasti is also associated with the celestial bodies Rahu and Ketu.
Legend has it that Lord Brahma was tasked with creating beautiful hills of Kailasa. As he was struggling, a piece fell to earth in the south, giving rise to Dakshina Kailasam, now known as Sri Kalahasti. The other Panchabootha Sthalams include Tiruvannamalai (Fire), Chidambaram (Space), Thiruvanaikaval (Water), and Kanchipuram (Earth). Sri Kalahasti is a place where ancient legends come to life!
