In the late 1800s, two vibrant villages existed in this area: Prittlewell, known for its Priory which still stands in Priory Park, and Leigh-on-Sea, famous for its delightful cockles and seafood. These villages played a significant role in shaping the town coat of arms for Southend, featuring the monk and fisherman symbolizing the monks of Prittlewell Priory and the fishermen of Leigh-on-Sea.
During the 1950s and 60s, Southend experienced its golden age. Daytrippers from London would eagerly travel by train to enjoy the attractions of the renowned Kursaal Amusement Park, try their luck on the seafront arcade fruit machines, or relax on the pebble beach. Nowadays, the Westcliff stretch and Leigh-on-Sea Old Town have imported sand for visitors to enjoy.
Although Southend is working hard to modernize, it seems to have become a bit perplexed along the way. Notably, South East Essex College has an impressive new campus conveniently situated next to Southend Central Railway Station.
