Sounkyo Onsen, meaning "Cloudy Gorge," may leave some visitors disappointed due to the effects of modern development. The concrete hotels and influx of tour groups throughout the gorge take away from the natural wonders of the area. However, if you adjust your expectations, Sounkyo Onsen lives up to its promise as a hot spring resort. The cool mountain air and steam rising from the streets create a unique atmosphere. Additionally, it serves as an excellent starting or ending point for treks through the national park. The town center has recently been landscaped with a pleasant touch, reminiscent of the Swiss countryside.
