Sonmarg, known as the meadow of gold, is a paradise for trekkers. Its adventurous routes take you through stunning landscapes of green water and frozen lakes. The mystical water of the vale is believed to bestow eternal riches. Even during summers, the high altitude makes it cold, so it is important to always carry warm clothes and rainproof gear.
One of the main attractions in Sonamarg is the Thajiwas glacier, which is located just 3 kilometers away. You can even enjoy a sledge ride on the snow here, even in the middle of summer! To reach the glacier, you can hire a pony from Sonamarg. The ponywalas might demand up to Rs. 1500, but with some haggling, you can get there for just Rs. 500, especially during the off-season.
The Thajiwas area also offers a superb campsite, making it a prime location for trekkers. During the summer, the Sind River becomes a natural hatchery for trout, making it great fun for anglers, as long as you have obtained permission from the fisheries department. The ascending river in Sonamarg also makes it an ideal spot for river rafting adventures.
