Understand
Soltau, a parish founded in the 9th century, started off as a small farming community. In the 14th century, the village was established as the town center to protect against robber barons. However, the town faced numerous challenges throughout its history, including fires and the destruction caused by the Thirty Years' War. In 1914, Soltau became home to the largest German prisoner of war camp during World War I. The town was also heavily bombed during World War II. After the war, Soltau served as a British garrison during the Cold War. Today, it is a health resort nestled in the picturesque Lneburg Heath, offering over 875 miles of well-marked hiking and biking trails.
