Ngbe-Bugl is Panama's largest indigenous community, known for its rich culture and population. Located in the Besik District, the capital town of Soloy is nestled in the breathtaking foothills of Central Cordiella. Home to approximately 6,000 Ngbe people, most of whom are subsistence farmers, Soloy thrives alongside the mighty Fonseca River, which plays a central role in daily Ngbe life. The town is surrounded by picturesque valleys, hills covered in secondary dry forest, and agricultural land. For the adventurous, pristine cloud forests await in the remote mountains of Comarca Ngbe-Bugle. Although rustic, Soloy now has electricity (since summer 2017) and offers amenities like mobile phone reception, running water (not drinkable), and basic lodgings, restaurants, and stores. Thanks to the efforts of grassroots NGOs, local community tourism groups, and volunteers, Soloy has developed some tourist infrastructure, providing visitors with a practical and friendly introduction to Ngbe culture and the Comarca. However, it is important to be aware of the history of conflict with Panamanian authorities and international mining corporations, as the indigenous communities have faced environmental degradation due to farming and exploitation. Some indigenous residents may be cautious when encountering outsiders, given their understandable concerns.
