The town is situated in a geologically interesting area, with scruffy mountains, wetlands created by the Rio Grande, and a volcanic uplift studied by scientists at New Mexico Tech. If you've chosen to drive to Socorro, you can access it from Albuquerque and El Paso via Interstate Highway 25. Along the way, you'll find good roads and full services approximately every 50 miles.
