Welcome to the vibrant and tragic city of Sihanoukville! With a history spanning thousands of years, this upstart gem emerged just fifty years ago. Once a deep-sea port, it was built by a French-Cambodian construction company amidst the lush jungle of newly independent Cambodia. Named after the ruling prince, Sihanoukville quickly became a hub of activity, attracting Cambodia's elite and becoming home to the first Angkor Beer brewery and the modernist Independence Hotel. However, the party came crashing down in 1970 when political turmoil struck and Cambodia descended into civil war. The town was renamed Kompong Som and faced hard times, even becoming a target for the Khmer Rouge. The port suffered bombings by the U.S. Air Force after the Khmer Rouge hijacked an American container ship. Even after the regime was overthrown, the town grappled with banditry. But peace prevailed in 1993, and Sihanoukville has spent the last ten years picking up the pieces. Today, the scars of war are fading, and the city is buzzing with construction. The historic Independence Hotel has been revived, and locals, expats, and backpackers are enjoying the vibrant bars and restaurants that have sprung up. Don't miss out on experiencing "Asia's next trendsetting beach," as the New York Times aptly named it!
