Srivardhan (taluka) is a place of great historical importance. According to legends, Arjuna Pandav himself visited this ancient place during his pilgrimage. In the past, Srivardhan was a bustling trading hub, attracting merchants from all around. European travelers have mentioned it as Ziffardan in their accounts. It served as a significant port during the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries under Ahmadnagar and Bijapur. Dom Joao de Castro described Srivardhan as a pier with little water at low tide, but inside spacious and grand. It is also renowned as the birthplace of Balaji Visvanath, the first Pesva of the Maratha Empire. This illustrious town was one of the sixteen fortified places in the Konkan region, ceded by Balaji Visvanath Pesva to Kanhoji Ahgre of Kolaba in 1713. Srivardhan holds a special place in history as it witnessed the rise of the Maratha Empire under the leadership of Balaji Visvanath Pesva.
