Welcome to Shimada, a city located in the middle part of Shizuoka Prefecture in Japan. Situated between Shizuoka and Kakegawa, Shimada is home to the majestic Oi River, which originates from the Minami Alps, a mountain range with 14 peaks towering over 3000 meters in elevation. In the past, Shimada played a significant role as a fording town during the Edo Period when crossing bridges over the river was forbidden by the Edo Government. It became a crucial point on the famous Old Tokaido Highway, facilitating the journey between Edo (now known as Tokyo) and Kyoto. Shimada is divided into three distinct areas: the Former City Area, Kanaya Area, and Kawane Area. The Former City Area holds historical significance as the original town area developed from the former lodging station of the Old Tokaido Road. Within the city's mountainous regions, you can find peaks such as Mount Chiba, which serves as a training ground for Shugendo practitioners. The Hatsukura area south of the Oi River is particularly renowned for its excellent green tea, a specialty first developed by former samurai warriors who found themselves unemployed after the Edo government ended. Kanaya Area, formerly a separate municipality now amalgamated into Shimada City, also originated from the former lodging station of the Old Tokaido. This area is well-known as the starting point of the Oigawa Main Line, famous for its locomotive train service. Additionally, it proudly hosts a portion of the scenic Makinohara Tea Plantation, which is a must-see for visitors seeking iconic Japanese views. While less recognized and more off the beaten path than Kanaya and the former Shimada area, the Kawane Area holds its own unique allure. The notable town area of Iyeyama once prospered as a lodging station for pilgrims visiting the revered Akiha Shrine. Recently, it has gained attention due to the enchanting Kawane Onsen. This area also showcases a breathtaking section of the Oi River named Uyama-no-Nanamagari, known for its remarkable winding path.
