- Marshrutka: Hop on one of the frequent marshrutkas that run from Tbilisi's Didube market to Gori and Tskhinvali via Gori. Don't worry if you're coming from Kutaisi, there's also less frequent service available for you.
- Taxi: If you're looking for a more personalized and convenient ride, you can hire a taxi from Tbilisi's Didube market. They can take you to the Gori region or other destinations within Shida Kartli.
- Russian border: Before planning any trips to the Russian-Georgian border, keep in mind that it's closed to non-CIS country nationals. It's also not recommended to cross the North Ossetian-South Ossetian border due to regional instability and corruption.
Understand
Shida Kartli, a region in Georgia, experiences a distinct division between its northern and southern parts. The northern region, including Java, the City of Tskhinvali, and northern parts of Kareli and Gori, is claimed by the secessionist government of South Ossetia and remains beyond the control of the Georgian central government. The presence of ethnic Ossetes, who form the majority of the population in this northern part, bestows the region with a unique cultural character. On the other hand, the southern part of Shida Kartli is predominantly inhabited by ethnic Georgians and shares a close cultural connection with neighboring regions.
