Shaker Heights, established in 1822, has a rich history. Originally the North Union Settlement of the Shaker community, a religious group that had communities scattered across the eastern and midwestern United States. The Shaker group dammed Doan Brook and created the beautiful Shaker Lakes. However, their strict practice of celibacy eventually led to their decline in the late 1800s.
In 1912, the Van Sweringen brothers incorporated the village of Shaker Heights with a vision to create a garden community for commuters to Cleveland. They carefully planned the town, including curving streets, tree planting, and even establishing a streetcar system that directly connected the city to downtown Cleveland. The town's strict building codes resulted in a unique architectural identity, and many of the mansions and buildings found in Shaker Heights are featured in architectural texts. Throughout the years, the town has been home to various famous personalities, including actor Paul Newman, comedian Molly Shannon, and football player Nate Clements.
